Buying Other Than New
Even if climate change weren't a worry (it is), and if we didn't need to think about conserving resources (we do), buying used would still save money.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without
- Old New England Proverb
Even if climate change weren't a worry (it is), and if we didn't need to think about conserving resources (we do), buying used would still save money.
Manufacturers make goods in the hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, and even millions. Most of us live in oversized houses packed with these items, many of which we don't use. If we run out of space at home, there's just over 2 billion square feet of storage space for rent in the United States.
Chances are whatever you need or want to buy is available in a condition similar to new if you take the time to look. You'll save money and save the earth!*
I have shopped on eBay for years without few if any issues. I've bought hundreds of items like clothing, books, tools, photography gear, and electronics. If I can't find it on eBay, I'll check Facebook Marketplace or Amazon Marketplace; (they sell their returns there). There are many sources for used books; I get most of mine on eBay.
Yes, reading used books or wearing used clothes gives some people the fantods, not me.
That's my argument for buying other than new. It's not all important that you agree, but there it is.
*If you think this kind of gesture is too small to matter, then a dollar bill is too small to matter; you might as well give it to me.
